Guardians And Tutelars

Guardians are mages who have been drawn by their affinity to pools of mana that are large enough to produce a fortress. Their main task it to keep the mana pool moving and clean of pollutants that may draw dangerous creatures from other worlds, demons, or open larger rifts. As guardians age and become more imbued with the mana of their fortress the less they are willing (some say able) to leave the pool of magic and are compelled to return to the pool they tend. Their ability to manipulate the pool in a fortress also increases with time. In return the fortress provides a mage with extreme amounts of mana and extends their lives, possibly indefinitely.
Pools that are large enough can draw more then one mage. These secondary or tertiary caretakers are called Tutelars, and are meant to assist the Guardian in cleaning the pools. They are not as attached to a fortress and remain able to spend indefinite amounts of time away from their pool.
They are able to manipulate the fortresss and tap into the mana of the pool, but it does not extend their life the same way it does for a guardian. Tutelars can be summoned to their fortress if a guardian requires them. They often act as the ambassadors or agents of their guardians.
